Tribe DTS

“And it turns out that tribes, not money, not factories, can change our world, can change politics, can align large numbers of people. Not because you force them to do something against their will. But because they wanted to connect.”

 -Seth Godin

Welcome to The Tribe Discipleship Training School!

Through the The Tribe DTS, we seek to provide the theological, spiritual, and relational foundations required for meaningful and sustainable integration of faith and work in all spheres of society.  The Tribe integrates three primary elements to further the social, cultural, and spiritual renewal and transformation of our world:

biblical narrative identity

spiritual and personal renewal

community formation

The Tribe DTS is a 6 month training program (Phase I), with an optional additional 6 month Phase II.  Our school is designed for young adult who is looking for better integration of Faith, Passion and Global Issues and has been making some steps already in seeing that become reality in their life.

Phase I – “Green House Effect” 6 Months (Standard DTS)

Your first 3 months will be a ‘Hands On’ learning spent on the beautiful University Of The Nations Campus located in Kona, Hawaii where you will live in community representing more then 25+ different nations on the earth.  Once you have arrived  you will be launched into a greenhouse of learning where some of the top authors/speakers in the world on biblical narrative identity, spiritual and personal renewal and community formation will come and dialogue with you one week at a time on their topic.  You will have the chance to hear them speak, share and discuss with them, all while building relationships with your peers and the speakers.

Then it is time to GO global!  For 2 months you will be sent with a team of your peers to a country in the world desperate for the new information you have to share both in word and action.  You will have a chance to develop relationships with nationals while giving them a “Gospel Experience”.  A Gospel Experience will give you the opportunity to leave something lasting that will help change their physical and spiritual situation for the better.  Whether training and building water catchment tanks/filters alongside locals or building homes for families who are seeking shelter in desperate situations, you will show the gospel with your actions while getting the opportunity to share with them in relationship.

We have some of the best partners in the world that will enable you to bring the best “gospel experience” to the nations.  Justice Water is an amazing organization who will be training you right in Kona, HI and enable you to bring the gospel of CLEAN WATER!

We have also partnered with the FoodMachine which is a new innovative form of Hydro-ponics.  They plan to train you and send you to build a system that can bring the gospel of Food to the hungry!

You will then return back to the U of N Kona, HI campus for a remaining 1 month of critical debrief and volunteer practicum in a traditional missions framework.  Here you will be facilitated in a deconstruct of all you have learned the last 5 months.  We will help you to think critically and develop a meaningful and sustainable integrated plan for your  next steps. All the while you will be put in a work situation on the campus and learn how to walk out transformation when you return to your career.  Here you will learn how to create and sustain practical applications to walk out faith in work and family.

Phase II – “Transplant Project” 6 Months (Optional)

This is where the rubber meets the road.  It’s time to integrate and be transplanted from the greenhouse back into society as an active member who’s bringing renewal in your city.  You will be assigned a coach who will walk with you for a period of six months.  Bi-weekly you will have phone or video chat sessions with your coach to walk through your re-integration to life outside the greenhouse of learning you just experienced.  We will also provide you with continued learning and ways to practically apply all you’ve learned.  Here we will work with you to create a community of friends and pass off all that you have learned in the first phase.  We will connect you to others in your area who are also looking to be ‘people of renewal’ in your city.  This is where you become a change agent who, lives in action with strategy, in your new global TRIBE!

Your School Leaders!

Matt & Mina Whitlock

Born and raised in New York, Matt quickly wanted to leave his home city and begin to travel the world. After doing a year of bible college at Elim Bible Institute he joined YWAM in 1996 and spent 3 months in Kona, Hawaii and 2 months in Thailand. After a few years of education and both long/short term opportunities with YWAM, Matt then spent some time in the corporate world where he was mentored by and worked for Brian Molitor of Molitor International. It was those skills Matt used to return to leadership at the YWAM Kona, Hawaii campus and serve until being lead to southern California where he was hired by Capo Beach Calvary to start a “low maintenance, high impact” model of faith community for 18-30yr olds, called Symbolic. Over the past 5 years symbolic has been a green house for implementing a variety of new and dynamic models of community that are now being implemented into the launch of The Tribe. Matt is an avid blogger, published author and speaker of all things GOD!

Mina was born and raised in her single digit years in Los Angeles, California. At age 10 Mina moved to Seattle, where she grew up and completed her time at the University of Washington and went on to join YWAM in Kona, Hawaii. That took her to Egypt and Israel for 2 months were she grew in a passion for the middle east! She then spent the next couple of years staffing with YWAM’s pre-requiste program the DTS (Discipleship Training School) and led teams to places such as Sudan, Jordan and Lebanon.  Following God’s lead, she then returned to her roots in California to work in business banking where she spent all of her time off and evenings serving along side Matt with Symbolic. It’s with her skills in leadership, logistics and hospitality that she plans to serve The Tribe.
